James Navé here, and I'd be delighted if you'd join me for this special memory-rich gathering —a live Zoom performance of Dylan Thomas' A Child's Christmas in Wales. Since 1991, I've recited this story poem every Christmas, beginning in a Greensboro, North Carolina, parking lot while waiting for a movie to start with a friend, my audience of one.
I've performed A Child's Christmas in Wales every Christmas since, from snowy street corners to quiet gatherings in homes and libraries, at the American Church in Paris, and even in a damp, cozy community center in Roundstone, Ireland.
This isn't just a reading; it's a journey. A Child's Christmas in Wales holds a special kind of magic—the nostalgic recollections of a Christmas past, where young boys lie in wait with snowballs, old uncles nap by the fire, and the streets echo with laughter. The piece pulls us into a simpler time, filling our minds with scenes of wonder, mischief, and deep, childlike joy.
On a cross-country drive in the summer of 1991, I memorized the poem, repeatedly listening to Dylan Thomas's voice as I traveled from Seattle to Asheville. I've since shared it each year to bring a bit of magic into the holiday season.
Join me, and let's step together into a world where Christmas means snowy Welsh hills, fireside laughter, and stories that linger. Following the performance, you're warmly invited to a salon-style conversation—an old-fashioned gathering.
Let's exchange holiday tales, memories, and bits of joy and nostalgia. It's my gift to you this season, a moment to gather in a spirit that seems increasingly rare, a Christmas long past but never forgotten.
So, mark your calendar: Wednesday, December 18, 4-5 pm ET. I'll be here, waiting to share this tale with you and to celebrate the season together. Until then, be well and enjoy each glimmer of this beautiful season.
